Any liquid can be offered to encourage the child to drink, for example, fresh fruit juices (except if the child has mumps, as the acid causes pain in the parotid glands), milk, light soup, milk shake, any beverage that you normally like. Try to vary the drinks as much as possible. Use anything that can make drinks more interesting, like colored straws. Offer small amounts at a time.

(Follow the doctor’s advice about children with illnesses and diarrhoea; they may be left ‘liquids only’ for a while.) Let the children choose their favorite food. Give them smaller but more frequent meals. If your child has a sore throat, they may prefer ice cream or yogurt. Foods like soups, dairy desserts, and ice cream can be easier for sick children to eat and digest. Always supervise sick children while they eat.
