Website design By BotEap.comHere’s a story that explains the difference between benefits and features.

Website design By BotEap.comLast year I decided to buy an iPod. There was a $ 150 iPod with 2 gigabytes and a $ 199 iPod with 4 gigabytes. At first I decided to buy the 2 gig iPod. It sounded like a lot of bytes, so why spend another $ 50? Later I found out that the 2-gigabyte iPod could hold 500 songs (which seemed like a lot), but the 4-gigabyte iPod could hold 1,000. That’s double for just $ 50 more.

Website design By BotEap.comAs part of my job, I often save mp3 files from long talks or teleseminars. They usually last 60 minutes or more. These would surely count as multiple songs. Suddenly 4 gigabytes didn’t seem like much and I bought the 4 gig iPod.

Website design By BotEap.comThe characteristic was the number of gigabytes. The benefit was the amount of audio the iPod could hold. The feature meant nothing to me until I was able to translate it into benefits.

Website design By BotEap.comIt’s okay to include features later in your copy. But you should always start with the benefits. So do you get the difference between features and benefits? Examine yourself and find out: decide if I am describing a benefit or a feature.
