Before that, it had been founded as White Oak Flats which was settled primarily by veterans of the American Revolution. Then came a post office named after the postmaster who rented a corner space in a building owned by Radford Gatlin. Gatlin was expelled from the city before the Civil War, but the Gatlinburg name remains the same to this day. In 1934, Gatlinburg became the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With its strategic location, it continues to invite more visitors each year and new restaurants, shops and attractions increase each year.
