Website design By BotEap.comThe Tamil Ghajini, released in 2005, was a runaway success. Surya, the hero, established his presence in the Tamil (and South Indian) film industry. But the hype surrounding the film before its release and also during its early days is nothing compared to what Aamir Khan’s Ghajini faces. A week before the release, Ghajini was everywhere: from haircuts to eight-packs and Asin, anyone and anything related to Ghajini was under the media eye. So the hype factor is definitely in favor of the Hindi movie. After all, the combination of Aamir and ARRahman has always sparked interest in getting the film made public.

Website design By BotEap.comSurya did a wonderful job playing a rich boy in love with a bubbly middle-class girl. And he also did well in the role of a patient with “short-term memory loss.” But his performance is nothing compared to what Aamir Khan, one of India’s best actors, has done in the movie. He has lived the role and performed both periods of the character’s life with the enthusiasm and perfection that only an actor like Aamir Khan can do. Surya is not a pushover, but Aamir’s experience comes to his aid. Ghajini Hindi scores again.

Website design By BotEap.comAs for the protagonist Asin, she has done a wonderful job in both versions. But her acting in the Tamil version was better and maybe acting with someone like Aamir weighed her down a bit. A good performance though and a great intro to Bollywood. Jiah Khan has played her role decent enough and she is better than Nayantara who played that role in Tamil. But it has to be said that these two ladies were sorely lacking in the movies and also the character was somewhat limited and flawed, to be fair.

Website design By BotEap.comMusic, of course, ARRahman outshines his longtime assistant Harris Jeyaraj when it comes to songs. BGM in Hindi film is harsh at times and I daresay Harris Jeyaraj has surpassed ARR in this regard. The performances of the songs were fantastic in the Tamil version and the songs of Bekha and Guzarish can never really match Oru Maalai and Suttum Vizhi of the Tamil version. Asin’s intro song is better in the Hindi film, but overall the Tamil film wins when it comes to representation.

The remake has minor changes from the Tamil one, but the climax, which was pitiful in the Tamil version, has been changed and is much better. And the name Ghajini now has a link to the story (I don’t want to give any spoilers here), while the Tamil one didn’t have one.

Website design By BotEap.comOk, Aamir has done a better job, but what about his chemistry with Asin? The chemistry is amazing between the two. He has to be seen to be believed. But the chemistry between Surya and Asin was even better and was one of the main reasons why the movie was a huge success. The pairing was so natural on screen, which is why the Surya-Asin pairing beats the Aamir-Asin pairing.

Website design By BotEap.comThe climax had major flaws in Ghajini Tamil and luckily they were dealt with in the Hindi film. The climax is now more in tune with the story and falls within the realm of acceptable logic.

Website design By BotEap.comThe verdict? The two movies are pretty even and maybe Ghajini Hindi wins by a slight margin. Two good movies, which could have been better. Yes, they are both based on the Hollywood movie Memento, but Ghajni is well done for Indian audiences.
