Humana and The Humana Foundation awarded 420 grants to nonprofit organizations in its headquarters city of Louisville and other communities where the company has a significant presence in 2006, paying attention to the three priority areas described above based on percentages in parentheses. In February 2005, the Trust for Public Land and Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson announced a $20 million initiative spearheaded by the community fundraising efforts of Humana co-founder and Chairman Emeritus David A. Jones. The funds will be used to continue the purchase of land that will transform Metro Louisville into a “Park City.” to which The Humana Foundation contributed $1.25 million.
Website design By BotEap.comHundreds of school children at Rockdale Paideia Academy celebrated the Cincinnati launch of TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use), a program made possible in Cincinnati through a partnership between the American Lung Association and ChoiceCare/Humana. During the launch event, students symbolically put out the world’s tallest cigarette (50′) by deflating it, causing it to collapse in seconds. Also featured was former Cincinnati Bengal Mike Martin, a performance by the Ropin’ Rockets (jump rope team) and a dramatic skit and rap song with anti-smoking messages.

The TATU program, under the partnership of the American Lung Association and the Humana Foundation. TATU uses a “kids helping kids” approach to teach elementary school children about the dangers of tobacco use. First, adult volunteers are trained to work with adolescents. The teens, in turn, will teach younger students the truth about tobacco and how tobacco companies often target children with sophisticated marketing campaigns. Research shows that teens are eager to talk to younger children, while this younger age group respects and listens to teens.

This partnership with Actors Theater of Louisville, which began its exclusive sponsorship of Humana’s annual Festival of New American Plays in 1979, is the longest partnership between a corporation and a theater in the United States, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006. Arts then honored Humana on November 8, 2006, in New York City. Humana has contributed more than $16.4 million to the festival since it began. Since then, it has quickly become an annual pilgrimage site where more than 20,000 theater lovers from around the world converge each year to see new works by emerging and established playwrights and get a first look at the future of American theater. More than 300 Humana Festival plays have been produced, representing the work of 206 playwrights. More than 90 million people around the world have seen additional productions of the many works that originated from the Humana Festival. Movie audiences have seen Humana’s works adapted for the screen.

Website design By BotEap.comThe Council of Foundations, a Washington, DC-based membership organization of more than 2,000 grant-making foundations, presented its “Critical Impact Award” for the foundation’s efforts to transform Romania’s health care system through of the Romanian Assistance Project. Humana and Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, Texas, provide funding and management for the project, which began in 1990 when former President George HW Bush asked American companies to help emerging democracies in Eastern Europe, which had been damaged for communism.

The division received a $4 million raise in April 2006. Two $1 million grants, one from The Humana Foundation and one from David and Betty Jones, attracted matching funds from Kentucky’s Bucks for Brains program. The Foundation’s gift will create an endowment for the program, while Jones’s gift is developing a new endowed chair for the division. The Foundation distributed copies to hundreds of Romanian Assistance Project volunteers and participants at celebrations in Romania and Louisville, Kentucky.
