This was the nadir of all times for autosports customizers. And the Corvette Sting Ray was the ideal hundred-piece raw material for sports car customizers. The headlights were molded and fitted and the bumpers were removed. So many Corvettes received an additional pair of taillights that were basically a factory option from General Motors’ Chevrolet Corvette. Later, when the wide, low-profile tires came along, so did the huge fenders. The speed hardware industry had boomed, so most Corvette engine parts were being replaced with the newer ones – hot set up.” In 1965 Chevy’s first big block was introduced in the Corvette, and the performance was more than amazing.

Many thought this was the beginning of the Corvette’s downfall, but in the urgent performance office, the 427-cubic-inch Rat Engine with its three two-barrel carbs and the 435-plus horsepower ratings that propelled the legend of Corvette tradition. The word Corvette conjures up the image of high performance sports car performance. An older age group replaced the cult of street racers as the Corvette’s primary consumers and customers. More of the Corvettes were equipped with luxury and comfort options like air conditioning, power steering, and telescoping steering columns. It wasn’t long before the Corvette with emission devices and soon the true ‘Vette type of performance was history.

A pre-owned Corvette at the time was essentially a particularly attractive sports car purchase.

In part, it was a case of limited supply and really high prices being offered by stock corvette and classic car auctions and the prices being asked in specialty car groups and publications. All things considered, it can be said that it may be a combination of the custom cars getting old and in need of renovation and the fifty-five mile road limit back in time. Perhaps it also seemed to be a matter of maturity in the kids who were the Corvette hot rodders at the time.
