Create a teenage dream in this Katy Perry-inspired bedroom

Website design By BotEap.comKaty Perry is as hot as a hot summer night (musically, inspiringly, visually, and conceptually). She’s been everything from a prom queen to a gothic vampire to a sexy “nerd.” The promotional images of her for her album Teenage Dream of hers really captured her style perfectly. The “California Gurls” pop star wore a Bettie-Paige-esque purple wig, a multicolored rubber bikini (with candy trim) and her feet were covered in a pair of designer chunky heels. So what does that say about a Katy Perry-inspired bedroom design? Well, it’s all about color, color AND more color, especially “girly” colors like bubblegum pink, honeysuckle, fuchsia, lavender, and cream (like the whipped cream topping a delicious Katy Perry sundae from her music video!) .

Website design By BotEap.comOne thing Katy can’t get enough of is animal prints, whether it’s a leopard print, cheetah print, or zebra print (just to name a few). In the spring, Katy ventured out to New York City in a yellow D&G dress with a cheetah print and black lace trim (which she’s no longer available to buy!). She also claimed that her favorite gift that she received from her was a leopard print coat. But while leopard and zebra prints may be on-trend, going overboard with the prints can take your room from chic to cheap very quickly. You’re designing a room with Katy Perry in mind, not a bedroom for one of the cast members from InStyle’s hit show Jerseylicious, so keep it tacky for “The Shore.” Also, why not wear something that’s a little more edgy? Ikat patterns are an interesting and colorful print that can add an unexpected touch to your home decor. You can find these designs on almost anything: chairs, bedspreads, blankets, pillows, or curtains. They add an exotic feel and an element of fun to any space and when someone asks where you got that cheetah print from, you can say it’s an ikat pattern, not cheetah, “honey.” They’re sure to spark a conversation or two in your new Katy Perry bedroom! However, you can add the animal prints via a sexy LUX faux fur throw for the foot of your bed and a leopard silk ribbon to border your lampshades.

Website design By BotEap.comWhen creating a Katy-themed bedroom, don’t forget pretty florals and pops of color, but not traditional florals, think outrageous colors and bold, quirky prints. Remember that the overall sense you want to achieve in your Katy Perry-inspired space is a warm, wicked sense of whimsy. One thing that comes to mind is the Perry’s Teenage Dream single cover, where she is every boy’s teenage dream perched on a fluffy pink bubblegum cloud. For paint or wallpaper colors, I would suggest warm shades of lilac, coral, and of course, bubblegum pink. These colors are sexy, feminine and flirty, all words that describe Katy very well. Try blending them all into your space by making one wall in each color and the fourth wall in cream, then take a thick thick strip of the cream (about 3 feet thick) and bring it across the other 3 colored walls horizontally about 1/3 below the ceiling to unify the room and grind the gum lollipop.

Website design By BotEap.comI was also inspired by the outfit Katy wore in the July 2010 issue of Billboard magazine. On the cover, Katy is covered in flowers from head to toe. So why not follow Katy’s lead by incorporating gifts from Mother Nature into her design scheme? For example, a vase filled with pink peonies will make your room feel warmer and more welcoming, especially since cold weather is just around the corner and fun and flirty Katy would approve of adding pom poms in bright yellow, light blue, and pink. . . She thinks of an Easter basket… but more chic! You can create an arrangement out of the pom poms by grouping them en masse in a bold sculptural vase. For wall art, find your favorite photo, poster or print of Katy and cut it into a dozen randomly sized pieces and frame each piece individually then group them on the wall to create the look of modern art.

I think every little girl’s (and many boys’) dream is to have a canopy bed (although some may not admit it, it’s probably the dream of many “grown-ups”). If Katy Perry is one thing, she’s definitely a princess (after all, she married an Englishman!). To finish off your Katy Perry-inspired bedroom, add a canopy over your bed with 10 yards of fabric – find something silky and shimmery to complete the look. I prefer a solid color in her palette and then add some throw pillows with bold animal prints and spooky florals. A canopy is very easy to achieve: just attach a nice stable ceiling hook in the center of the bed, then let the fabric halves puff out from the center down. If you search online, there are even more detailed instructions for creating your own canopy effects – just type it into your browser! While you’re at it, add a luxurious headboard that really finishes off that princess-like feel. I prefer something tufted and too tall (between 5 and 6 feet tall) and I make sure her bedding is supposed and very tactile with various forms of texture both visually and physically. Teenage “California Gurls” can be princesses too, right?
