Is Sony developing a slim PS3? – Part One

It earned respect for its advanced specifications, Blu-ray Disc playback capabilities, and free Wi-Fi; It quickly became one of the must-have devices, but it also received some criticism because of its high retail price. Despite a price cut about a year after launch, pressure was kept on by consumers and game developers alike on Sony to lower the price and bring it closer to its main rival, Microsoft Xbox 360. These rumors started with device websites posting supposedly “leaked” images of a stripped-down PS3. They looked a bit fake and there was a lot of skepticism about the reality of a new slim version of the console until the website that published the images received legal documentation from a company that makes the PS3 for Sony. This documentation required the removal of the images, but the most important element of this correspondence was that it added a lot of credibility to the validity of the images. Although they were removed, they spread across the internet and the rumors did not go away.

This obviously suggested that something was afoot. What would lead Sony to think that they suddenly needed twice as many consoles as they were already selling? Something seemed ready to drive demand, either in the form of a significant price reduction or a new version of the console, or even both.
