The least traveled route to sell to employers

Website design By BotEap.comOne of the most time-consuming interview questions asked in Kenya is “where do you see yourself in five (or ten) years?” I think he’s tired because honestly, isn’t there another way to ask the same question?

Website design By BotEap.comThe essence of that question is to establish the sense of direction and focus on the interviewee. Considering that I appreciate its value, now that I am an employer, I think there is something more important that I would be looking for wrapped up in that overused question.

Website design By BotEap.comWhat I would really like to hear from an interviewee say to me is: ‘What value are you going to add to my organization if I give you this job?’

Website design By BotEap.comHow the years of grand corruption directly affected your job search.

Website design By BotEap.comDue to our history, where for more than a decade there has been a sharp increase in corruption, we have a generation that is not convinced that the commitment to work is worth it. They have seen a significant number of people make a comfortable living by being fraudulent and dishonest.

Website design By BotEap.comThis is not intended to paint Kenya as a nation of fraud, but the culture of fraud rampant for about two decades gained significant root. One effect of those years was a slow or no growth economy. Subsequently, there is a generation that lives daily in a reality where finding work in Kenya is a tremendously difficult challenge with more than 70% of people in the age group 21-35 without paid employment. This is a state of affairs that was not created by them, but they have to live in it.

Website design By BotEap.comWhile I appreciate that fact, it is critical that those directly affected by the culture of grand corruption organize their affairs in a way that supports the honest achievement of their goals, rather than perpetrate the culture that is working against them.

Website design By BotEap.comA flawed work ethic displeases most employers.

Website design By BotEap.comA common complaint among employers is that young people, as those in the unemployed age group are often called, do not like to work.

Website design By BotEap.comIf that accusation is true, how did it happen?

Website design By BotEap.comThese are the children of the years of great corruption “success” stories. They saw a principal (just as an example) show up to school on foot because they couldn’t afford a bicycle let alone a car and take the direction of the government school as a principal.

Website design By BotEap.comAt the close of his first year in office, the manager, who by then had added inches around his belly, bought a fuel-intensive 4×4 pickup and went ahead to buy a piece of land; all in one sweep. On earth, they set up a great school to compete directly with the government they ran. Did the director previously have an identifiable business? Oh no!

Website design By BotEap.comThis generation saw the same principal who rarely sat in his office, came to work drunk, but the only consequence of that behavior was a lot of money to spend, even when the standards of the government school they were going to run went to the dogs. .

Website design By BotEap.comNow this is the same graduate the employer is holding. They want to be paid more for doing less, and they are making it very difficult for employers to run efficient businesses.

Website design By BotEap.comThey learned by observing that jobs don’t need one to add value to the organization, but money must overflow. It is insurmountable to convince employees with this mindset that they can take home a “normal” salary.

Website design By BotEap.comThat is very disgusting to ALL decent and honest employers who, by the way, are in the majority. Human resources are expensive, and employers prefer to steer clear of employees with this flawed work ethic.

Website design By BotEap.comA rare breed has great value in the competition for jobs.

Website design By BotEap.comThe potential employee who can tell an employer as soon as possible that they have a correct work ethic is one that the employer quickly sweeps into their organization. They are rare and therefore a valuable breed.

Website design By BotEap.comThe easiest way to prove to an employer that you have the correct work ethic is to show that you have thought hard about your job search efforts.

Website design By BotEap.comHastily crafted resumes and poorly crafted job purpose statements won’t give you a second look. The most significant tell-tale sign is the apparent lack of background checks shown by many job-seeking applicants in Kenya.

Website design By BotEap.comJob candidates who will take time to do a thorough background search on the organization they are applying for a job with, who demonstrate excellent ability to communicate their skills and competencies to the company, who indicate that they know exactly what skill and value will be added to organize job seekers who have chosen to take the road less traveled when looking for work in Kenya.

Website design By BotEap.comSuch search engines have far more value in the eyes of an employer than any title, first, second, or third can have. Showing that you are aware that employment means adding value to an organization will do wonders for you in the Kenyan employment landscape.
